Achieving Excellence Together in Mathematics
Mathematics Intent
At Hadrian Academy, we want all children to develop a deep understanding of Mathematics and to feel confident in using it every day. Our Teaching for Mastery approach encourages children to think carefully, solve problems creatively, and work collaboratively. We celebrate mistakes as part of learning and help children build resilience, so they are motivated to keep trying and find solutions.
Our goal is for every pupil to become a confident mathematician who can apply their skills, understand the relevance of maths in real life, and enjoy exploring the subject.
Mathematics Implementation
Our Teaching for Mastery approach is underpinned by the NCETM’s Five Big Ideas: coherence, representation and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency and variation.

We follow the Power Maths scheme from years 1-6 to guide our lessons, while adapting activities to meet the needs of every child. Lessons are carefully planned in small, connected steps to ensure all pupils can access the learning while also being appropriately challenged.
In addition, all children from Early Years to Year 5 take part in the Mastering Number programme. This programme supports the development of strong number sense, fluency with calculations, reasoning skills, and confidence in applying mathematics across a range of problems. By building a secure foundation in these key areas, Mastering Number helps children to understand mathematical concepts more deeply, solve problems efficiently, and be well-prepared for more complex learning as they progress through school.

In Key Stage 2, pupils prepare for the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), which ensures they have a secure recall of multiplication facts — an essential skill for everyday maths and problem-solving. To support this, children from years 2-6 also use TT Rockstars, a fun and engaging online platform that encourages regular practice and improves speed and accuracy in times tables.
Our teaching focuses on:
- Exploring concepts deeply using practical resources and visual models.
- Mathematical discussion where children explain their thinking and use precise language.
- Building fluency through practice and problem-solving in a range of contexts.
- Making connections across different areas of mathematics to help understanding stick.
- Responsive teaching, where staff address misconceptions, offer extra support, and provide challenges for those ready to extend their learning.
Mathematics Impact
As a result, pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts and are able to apply their knowledge with confidence and accuracy. They demonstrate fluency in key skills, reason effectively and approach problems with resilience and independence.
Pupils are able to articulate their thinking using appropriate mathematical language and make connections across different areas of Mathematics. They leave Hadrian Academy as confident, capable mathematicians who are well-prepared to apply their skills in a range of contexts beyond the classroom.
